From hotels with leisure centres to self-catering options with a beach at the back door, Waterford county has plenty of options to keep families with young and older children occupied.
There’s a range of accommodation for every budget. A selection of caravan parks can be found along the coast as well as self-catering options suited to family groups that need plenty of room. A number of hotels around the county offer family rooms and have swimming pools.
The city and county has plenty of fun family options open to young children and teenagers. Choose from open farms to adventure in the great outdoors, scenic walks, amusement arcades and some high-quality playgrounds.
There are cinemas in both Waterford and Dungarvan. In Tramore, there’s Splashworld, and for the more adventurous, an amazing selection of surf schools can be found along the Waterford coast, to keep families busy.
Take a unique trip on the Waterford and Suir Valley Railway, which leaves from the train station in Kilmeadan and travels along 6km of the abandoned Waterford-Dungarvan line. The trip boasts picturesque views of the banks of the Suir, lush farmland and beautiful mountains.
The Copper Coast Mini Farm is the perfect day out for families. Run by the Curran family in Fenor, the friendly little pet farm is a fun way for children to learn about and meet a wide variety of animals in a safe environment.
The kids will never be bored with a day out at Pirate's Adventure in Tramore. With mini golf, mini bowling, electric motor bikes, a bouncy castle, bouncy slide, arcade area, toddler area, a café and the new inflatable gladiator arena, there’s something to keep all the family happy.
Children are encouraged to ‘Run Amuck’ at the activity centre of the same name in Tramore. With its triple level play frame, three lane astra slide, air guns, airjet ball juggler, tube slide, football zone and bumper boats – not to mention toddler and baby areas – kids of all ages will find plenty to keep them amused.
Take a peek into Waterford’s past at the Waterford County Museum in Dungarvan. Among the artefacts on display are a selection of trophies, cap badges of the Irish Regiments from 1914-1918, military artefacts, and the camera and coin collections.
Lismore Heritage Centre has an exhibition space displaying all those famous names that have shaped the town since its foundation in 636AD. An audio-visual presentation is also part of the heritage centre experience while historic walking tours of Lismore also depart from the centre daily. The centre's Family Fun Experience is a part treasure trail and part nature hunt allowing the whole family to explore the town together.
For those that like to get out and about, there are plenty of activities on offer in Co Waterford, with host of equestrian centres, surf schools and hill-walking options, just to name a few.
