The Copper Coast

Taking a road trip along Co Waterford’s Copper Coast on a sunny day is a near-heaven experience. Get a gang together, pack the car with supplies, don the shades and treat yourself to some of the most stunning scenery the world has to offer.  The Copper Coast stretches from Tramore to Dungarvan and is ideal for a road trip. Along the way, you will be treated to quaint sea-side villages and jaw-dropping cliff-side views, all set against the back-drop of the Comeragh Mountains. You will encounter Fenor, Annestown, Dunhill, Boatstrand, Bunmahon and Stradbally. This particular stretch of coastline comprises eight family-friendly beaches, some of which permit surfing and diving too.

The first stop on the Copper Coast drive is Fenor. Its most famous attraction is the Fenor Bog, and the best way to see it is by taking the Boardwalk Trail. It’s worth taking time to admire the lake views and wildflowers. The nearby strand is Kilfarassay. Photographers among you will surely want to take a few snaps here, with breathtaking views all around.

The next port of call along the route is the colourful village of Annestown, with its beach set against rugged cliffs. For lovers of history, a visit to the 19th century church is a must, and while you’re there, take a walk along the River Anne as far as the ruins of Dunhill Castle.

You’ll happen upon the fishing village of Boatstrand next, which is very popular for swimming. It’s also another spot on the journey where the camera will come in handy – the views from Dunabrattin Head alone make the entire drive worthwhile.

Bonmahon has a Blue Flag beach which stretches for 2.5 kilometers. The area was once the centre of a thriving copper mining industry, and remnants of it can be still seen in the area. Bonmahon is a great place for exploring, with hidden coves and cliff walks. Fans of geology can check out the Ogham Stones located at the Geological Garden.

The last stop on The Copper Coast, before you hit Dungarvan, is Stradbally. This quaint village has the geographical privilege of being nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and the Comeragh Mountains. Stradbally is famous for scooping numerous Tidy Town awards, and is located close to the Blue Flag Clonea Beach. If you remembered to pack the golf clubs, you can finish your road trip with a round at The Gold Coast Championship Golf Course.
