Waterford and Suir Valley Railway
All aboard to experience the magic of rail!
The magic of rail’s golden age has been brought back to life at the beautifully restored Kilmeadan Station in Co Waterford.
Visiting railway passengers pay their fare at the ticket office- a converted rail carriage- before boarding the train where the conductor checks their tickets. When everyone is safely on board the whistle blows and the driver pulls away from the station. . On the journey enjoy the beauty of the Suir Valley; a partially opened carriage lets you take in the panoramic views of the rolling farmland of Waterford and across the river to Co Kilkenny. The track winds along the river giving passengers glimpses of areas accessible only by train and even peeking into the world famous Mount Congreve Gardens.
The railway journey is a 17km round trip lasting just under one hour.
The rolling stock is a Simplex diesel locomotive that was built to operate in the peat industry and then used when digging out the Channel Tunnel. The carriages which have both closed and partially opened seats were specially built for the Waterford & Suir Valley Railway. There is seating capacity for up to 70 passengers.
Waterford & Suir Valley Railway is a community heritage project with charitable status (Ref : Chy 13857). It is operated by volunteers with support from FAS jobs training schemes.
Waterford & Suir Valley Railway is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Ireland’s south east. Always a big hit with kids the railway organises special family events throughout the year including Teddy Bear Picnics and the Santa Express!
